10 tips for choosing a Realtor
Allison Goodhart DuShuttle, a Realtor in Virginia, wrote a great article about how to choose a Realtor. It’s something that’s more important than a lot of people think.
I often equate it to dating: you need to be able to work with your Realtor and Mortgage professional, and they need to be able to work with each other. Buying a home is a process, and it requires a lot of teamwork to make it all happen.
So by all means, ask your co-worker, your friend, or Google to recommend a Realtor in your area. Just understand that that person may not be a great fit for you, even if they are a great Realtor. If you don’t feel a connection – that’s ok. The best agents will understand.
Relationship with you is her #1 bullet, but the others: Area Knowledge, Availability, Communication style… All important points as well. Make sure that you have an in-depth conversation UP FRONT with whoever you choose and iron those things out.
I really like that you say to find someone that you will get along working with. Since you are trusting them to help you buy or sell a house, it would be bad if they didn’t get along with you. It would also be nice if they had special connections that they would share with you.
My wife and I have been trying to find a home to buy without any luck. We have been considering hiring a realtor. I like that you mentioned that a good realtor might not necessarily be a good fit for you, and you should find somebody that you feel connected to. That is something that is really important to us.
