Networking Like an Entrepreneur
Forming relationships as an entrepreneur can be beneficial in many ways – it could lead to new opportunities, or offer you the chance to find a mentor. Networking is a great way to make new relationships and build upon them, and below are a handful of essential ways you as an entrepreneur can connect and network with others.
Be an Active Entrepreneur
Before attending an event or meeting someone for the first time, prepare yourself. Actively go out of your way to find out more about the person you’ll meet and ask yourself: what do you have in common? What questions can you ask them? Can you offer them anything that could help them?
Put a little work in before heading to the function you have lined up. Find out who might be there and decide what you want out of the day. Will you meet future clients, business associates, or a new mentor perhaps? You need to be prepared to interact with many different types of people.
Utilize Social Media
Social media has become increasingly important when it comes to networking. Create a profile that makes you stand out and lists your strengths and what you can offer. Beyond just making a profile, you have to be active on social media – create discussion, connect with people from your industry, and join appropriate groups.
Not only can you connect with fellow entrepreneurs but you can also speak directly to clients and customers through social media. Encourage conversation and questions and share any positive things said about you or your organization on your social media platform.
Organize Your Own Opportunities
There will be various networking events online and in person that you can attend throughout the year, but why not set up your own? Create local meet-ups that encourage others like yourself to come together to network. You’ll stand out and encourage community for your industry.
Creating something yourself could lead to follow-ups and if the event orchestrated by you is popular enough, there may even be enough interest to hold another – which could lead you to create your very own network of people which you can nurture and grow.
Give Back to Others
So, you’re now prepared and you know enough about the people you’ll be meeting to make a great first impression. After the networking event or conversation with a new contact or client, the next step is to follow-up and give back.
Did you promise your new connection something only you can offer? Has your meeting with them encouraged you to do something for your local community – attend a charity event and help out for example? You’ll be remembered if you truly follow through and stay true to your word.
How important is networking for your business? Networking with either people from your industry or new clients can help you not only grow your business, but grow as an entrepreneur. What lengths did you go to in order to get noticed as an entrepreneur?
